Twelve-year-old Sara Johnston-Fischer has BIG PLANS for this summer:
- Come up with her Reinvention Project list with her BFFs
- Totally nail the list so she can start middle school new and improved
-Start to write an AMAZING novel
- Figure out an idea for the amazing novel
- Learn to surf
It's going to be perfect...until she finds out that her family is going on a surprise cross-country train trip. Suddenly her plans are going off the rails. Sara loves her family, of course. But 24/7 for a month is a lot of bonding time. Her travel companions include:
- Ladybug, her ALL-CAPS-LOUD younger sister
- Laurel, her activist older sister, and Root, Laurel's poncho-wearing hippie boyfriend
- Her two moms, one of whom is writing a book about the trip...which will include every embarrassing detail of Sara's life
As they travel from New Orleans to Chicago to the Grand Canyon and beyond, Sara crams every hilarious and heartbreaking detail into her journal, along with notes, postcards, and souvenirs she picks up along the way. And while it doesn't turn out to be the summer she imagined, by the end, Sara realizes she might go home reinvented after all.
