There's an old yellow dog wandering around town, and you can bet that eleven-year-old Callie--fearless, a little stubborn, and a lot nosy--is gonna figure out who he belongs to. But her sleuthing causes her to cross paths with Wendell, a white boy her very same age. As the two try to find the old dog's owner, their segregated town doesn't take kindly to their new friendship.
Meanwhile, a nearly invisible boy has lost his dog. He can't remember when exactly, and he can't figure out why he's stuck in a cabin by the river. His companion, a younger boy who's been invisible far longer, explains that they are ghosts, but they can't seem to cross the river to the other side just yet...
As Callie and Wendell's yellow-dog quest brings them closer and closer to the cabin in the woods--closer to the invisible boys--the townspeople's prejudice flares, and soon flames of anger and hat will threaten everyone.
