The works of Belgian surrealist painter Rene Francois Ghislain Magritte make unusual use of common images juxtaposed with unusual contexts that transform the meaning in the familiar. The juxtaposition is frequently termed "magical realism." Like other Surrealists, his art challenges assumptions of what art should be, yet it does not rely on dreamy, hallucinogenic images that are the staples of Surrealism. Instead, Magritte's images emerge from reality and the visible world around us.
