Description

Exquisitely simple, yet enormously complex, the egg is one of nature's marvels. This Video Field Trip, produced by PBS39, explains modern egg production, from the development of the egg within the hen, through the packing of washed, sized and graded eggs for sale. The film is suitable for agriculture, family and consumer sciences, economics and science programs as well as other classes.

Also on the DVD is a .pdf Teacher's Guide containing a host of lessons for use in conjunction with this Video Field Trip. Written by education professionals, this guide allows you to choose the lessons that are the most appropriate to suit your curriculum or your schedule. Feel free to photocopy or print the materials on the DVD for use in the classroom.

Additional information on eggs is available at www.incredibleegg.org, including the Eggcyclopedia, an alphabetical compendium of egg facts and figures, diagrams and definitions of egg-related words from air cell to zeaxanthin.

For a school video project, Josh and Kenlyn decide to investigate the egg industry. Their assignment is to find out how the egg industry has changed over the years, where it is today, and come up with a conclusion as to why the industry has changed.

Josh and Kenlyn start with the basics—an overview of the hen and the egg. A biology lesson on egg formation takes a look inside the hen, using animation to show egg formation. Then it's a look at the egg itself, from the yolk to the shell and everything in between.

To see how the industry had changed, Josh and Kenlyn take a look at the history of laying hens and housing. Using archival footage and photos, they go from the backyard coop to the huge farms of today, noting the changes along the way.

And no video project would be complete without road trips! First, Josh and Kenlyn interview animal research experts for a scientific view of hens and eggs. Next, the kids are off to an egg farm for on-location shooting, where the camera follows eggs from the laying house all the way to the refrigerated trucks for delivery.
